Model 15 Positive Bias Relay from Rotork Fairchild

Rotork Fairchild Model 15 Positive Bias RelayModel 15 Positive Bias Relay is designed for applications that require an output pressure that is the sum of a controlled input signal plus a fixed bias. This pneumatic relay provides an output pressure that represents the input signal pressure plus a preset bias.

Operating Principles

The Model 15 Positive Bias Relay provides an output pressure that represents the input signal pressure plus a preset bias. Mathematically Po = Ps + K, where Po is the output pressure, Ps is the signal pressure, and K is the spring constant. This unit, available in several bias range configurations to meet a variety of output requirements, offers excellent sensitivity and high flow capacity in a small volume.

The unit is well-suited to a variety of control applications, including range shifting, and tension control, and pressure control from a remote location.

Model 15 Positive Bias Relay Q & A

+ What is the function of the Fairchild Model 15 Relay?
The Model 15 is a positive-bias pneumatic relay: it produces an output pressure equal to the input (signal) pressure plus a fixed spring bias. In formula form, ???? = ???? + ??, where ???? is your signal input and K is the spring constant (bias) set by an internal screw. This makes it ideal for applications like range shifting, remote pressure control, or tension control, where you need to boost a pneumatic signal by a constant offset.

+ What are the pressure and flow specifications of the Model 15?
The Model 15 supports a maximum supply pressure of 250 psig. Its output (or signal) pressure can go up to 150 psig, depending on the bias range selected. For flow, it has a capacity of approximately 40 SCFM (68 m3/hr) under typical conditions (100 psig supply, 20 psig setpoint).
+ How accurate and stable is the output from the M15 relay?

The Model 15 is very sensitive — it can respond to changes as small as ? inch of water column, making it suitable for high-precision pneumatic control. To improve stability, it uses a balanced supply valve that reduces the effects of fluctuations in supply pressure. It also includes an aspirator tube and a separate control chamber to counteract downstream pressure droop and prevent "hunting" or oscillation.

+ What materials is the M15 made from, and what environmental ranges does it support?
The relay housing is made from aluminum, providing durable yet lightweight construction. Internal trim is crafted from stainless steel, brass, and zinc-plated steel, while the diaphragm is typically Buna-A on Dacron. It’s rated to operate in very wide ambient temperatures: from ?40°F up to +200°F (?40°C to 93.3°C). A mounting bracket is available to support flexible field or panel installation.

+ What bias ranges are available, and how do I choose or adjust them?
The Model 15 comes in several bias-range configurations, letting you pick a bias that matches your desired output offset. You adjust the bias using an internal range screw, which changes the preload of the spring (i.e., the “K” in ???? = ???? + ??). Depending on your application, you can select part numbers (or variants) with different setpoint ranges (e.g., 1–60 psig, 2–150 psig) and port sizes.
