FLD-HSC-TL High-Reliability Hydrocarbon Sensor from Naftosense

FLD-HSC-TL High-Reliability Hydrocarbon Sensor from NaftosenseThe FLD-HSC-TL is a high-performance passive hydrocarbon detector designed to detect the unwanted presence of a wide range of liquid hydrocarbons. This multiplexed sensor cable provides quick reaction to light and heavy hydrocarbons and can be used in outdoor environment. The detected hydrocarbons are primarily gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, motor oils, lube and transformer oils, etc. The FLD-HSC-TL sensor cable is offered as factory-assembled modular sensor with heavy-duty waterproof connectors (variant -C), or as a fixed-length encapsulated sensor string with 10-ft leader cable.

Naftosense is the only rope-style sensor in the world that can detect a small volume leak of refined fuels in under 30 seconds. With cleanable, reusable sensors and a 10-year factory warranty on the entire leak detection system, you can rest assured and quickly gain ROI while protecting your facility, and staff from flammable fuel leaks.

The sensor is specially engineered for reliable operation in both indoor and outdoor conditions. The waterproof connectors of -C version allow the sensor to be immune to short-term immersion in water. The encapsulated version is designed for long-term immersion in water in demanding outdoor conditions. The semi-conductive sensor material is extremely durable and can withstand long-term exposure to temperatures in excess of 100°C/212°F. The sensor cable is UV resistant, anti-static, anti-termite and anti-rodent and can be used in tropical applications.

  • Product has FM7745 approval
  • Detects refined fuels in under 30 seconds

FLD-HSC-TL High-Reliability Hydrocarbon Sensor Q & A

+ What kinds of hydrocarbons can this sensor detect, and how fast is its response time?

The FLD-HSC-TL is designed to detect a broad range of liquid hydrocarbons — including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, motor oils, lubricant oils, transformer oils, etc. For light refined fuels (gasoline, diesel/jet fuel), the detection time is very fast — under 30 seconds. So in short: high voltage = less current = smaller cables & fewer auxiliary components = lower installation cost, assuming your facility can supply the needed medium-voltage power safely. For heavier or more viscous fluids, detection takes longer:

  • Light crude oils: ~4-5 minutes
  • Heavy crude oils: ~8-10 minutes
  • Motor / Bunker Oils: ~10-13 minutes

+ What are the environmental, temperature, and mechanical/durability limits (outdoor, immersion, UV, etc.)?
  • Temperature range: ?40 °F to +185 °F (?40 °C to +85 °C) for the HSC-TL version.
  • Ingress / Protection: The connectors are IP68 rated, making them suitable for outdoor use and direct burial. The ?C variant (modular) has waterproof connectors for short-term water immersion; the encapsulated version is designed for more permanent immersion.
  • Chemical / physical resistance: The cable jacket is UV rated, anti-static, anti-termite, anti-rodent. The sensor is insensitive to vibration, methane, water, salt fog.
+ What are the installation considerations — length, number of sections, hazardous area classification, etc.?

Section Length & Multiplexing: The FLD-HSC-TL version allows up to 3 sections of sensor cable to be connected in series to the same Naftosense acquisition (monitoring) module.

Maximum cable length per section: Up to 50 ft (15 m) per section.

Hazardous Location / Safety classification: It is approved / certified for use in hazardous areas, with intrinsic safety ratings:

  • IS / I / 1 / ABCD / T4
  • I / 0 / AEx / ia IIC T4
  • Class I, Zone 0, Ex ia IIC T4 Ga; also “Class I, Div.1, Groups A-D; T4”

Compatibility: The sensor cable must be used with Naftosense’s sensor/acquisition (monitoring) modules. Using it with non-Naftosense modules may invalidate some performance claims or certifications.

+ What is the expected service life and warranty, and how is maintenance handled?
  • Warranty: 10-year factory warranty.
  • Operating / useful life: The materials are designed to last 20+ years under ambient use (for the “TL” version) at moderate conditions; the datasheet mentions long-term durability even at higher temperatures for some versions.
  • Reusability / maintenance: The sensor is reusable after contamination — meaning if it gets contaminated (by dirt, exposure, etc.), it can be cleaned. Reduced maintenance is flagged as a feature.

+ How does this sensor interface with monitoring / alarm systems, and what are the detection / false-alarm trade-offs?
  • Interface / Modules: The sensor cable is multiplexed, meaning multiple sections (up to 3 for TL version) can be connected to the same sensor module / monitoring unit. For installation in hazardous areas, an intrinsically safe acquisition module, or alternatively a Zener barrier, is required.
  • False alarm mitigation: The design is claimed to be insensitive to various environmental factors (vibrations, methane, water, salt fog, UV). These reduce chances of nuisance or false alarms due to non-hydrocarbon triggers.
  • Certifications / Regulatory standards: It holds FM Approvals, specifically tested to FM7745 standard; approvals for hazardous locations (Class I, Div/Zone, etc.) help satisfy regulatory requirements.
